A New York State Revolutionary War Trail Site
One of the finest pre-Revolutionary War homes on Long Island, Rock Hall was built in 1767 for Josiah Martin, a wealthy West Indian plantation owner. The Georgian-style home belonged to two of the area's most famous families, the Martins and Hewletts. In 1948, the Hewlett family deeded Rock Hall to the Town of Hempstead. After an extensive restoration, it opened as a museum in 1953. Today, Rock Hall is affiliated with the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA).
The museum offers a guided tour, programs of historic interest, special lectures and an educational program for students. Visit the museum's cellar. The Warming Kitchen, Cold Storage Room and Wine Cellar offer fascinating views of the rarely seen working areas in an 18th century plantation-style home. Also located in the cellar is the museum's ongoing Archaeology Exhibit Room. There you will see a display of 18th and 19th-century artifacts that continue to be uncovered during excavations at Rock Hall.
Visit the Museum Gift Shop for great gifts. Open during museum hours.

Meet the Author: Art Mattson

Book Signing and Discussion of Water & Ice: The Forgotten Shipwrecks of The Bristol and The Mexico.
In the fall of 1836, two overloaded American tall ships fi lled with cargo and immigrants, most from Ireland, left from Liverpool bound for New York. The ships arrived at the entrance to New York Harbor, but disaster struck before they docked. Water & Ice is a maritime and immigration history that tells a tale of villainy, heroism, cowardice and bravery.
Mr. Mattson has been the Historian in the Village of Lynbrook for over twenty years. He is the author of The History of Lynbrook (2005). He is a frequent lecturer and writer on topics as diverse as New York State history, motorcycling in Europe, and the poet Dante. His articles have been published in magazines, books and newspapers in the United States and five European countries. NO FEE.
